  1. The life of a celebrity or a public figure for that matter is one that is and always will be followed by the general public. Whether their actions are seen, as being good or bad the general public will hear about it through the vast machine that is the media. But why? Why are people so concerned with the lives of celebrities? Why not the life of the average Joe that lives down the street? The truth is that people are always looking for a “hero”, someone who they can look up to. And the thing that people like most about a hero is finding out about every single aspect of their lives and in some cases watching them fail. Celebrities such as Michael Phelps and Lindsay Lohan have experienced the receiving end of this criticism. And the sad thing in all of this is that people very quickly forget that these individuals are just as human as they are and are thus prone to make the same mistakes that they probably made in their own lives.
Michael Phelps made Olympic history at 2008 Beijing Olympics when he won and astounding eight gold medals to bring his career total to fourteen gold medals. He is now holds the Olympic record for having won the most Olympic gold medals. Phelps very quickly went from being just an Olympic star to a national icon, making appearances in commercials, radio shows, magazines, and even Wheaties cereal boxes. Life was great for Michael Phelps until a picture of him smoking marijuana surfaced on the Internet. Immediately, the US national swimming team banned him from the training facilities for three months, he had to make public apologies, and was subject to much questioning on public talk shows. There is no doubt that the usage of drugs is in fact illegal and not condoned buy the U.S. government, but in this case the punishment seems to have gone far beyond the crime. If the same situation were applied to some random individual in the country there is no way that the same punishment would be carried out with the same degree of public humiliation. It is true that Michael Phelps made a mistake when he decided to ingest the marijuana, but many people forget that he is just beyond the age of a college graduate and is just as human and prone to errors as any one of them.
The other side of this argument is that celebrities often get away with serving lesser or even bypassing the full extent of the law, where regular citizens would not have such an luxury. Lindsay Lohan’s present situation shows that such the case is not true. Her actions in the previous years have only abused the leniencies that the courts have offered her. And for that, Lohan will now accept the full responsibility of her actions, just like any citizen of this country would have to do. The coverage of Lohan’s case has also been quite unfair and unjustified. Lohan’s actions are not only unique to her situation, but are in fact quite common amongst many citizens in this country, but why place such emphasis on it because of the fact that now a celebrity is involved? Lindsay Lohan committed a crime and abused the sanctions that the court gave her initially (no one denies that), and now she will accept the consequences of her actions so let the media and the general public leave it at that.
Whether or not someone is a celebrity, the one factor that is common to all of us is the fact that we are ALL human. That being said, we all make mistakes, and while a celebrity is usually in the general spotlight it should not negate the fact that he/she is just as entitled to make mistakes as a normal citizen. While their lives will always be scrutinized, judged, and even criticized celebrities are human and thus should be seen and treated likewise while giving the same courtesy of privacy that we all enjoy.

  3. Being a public figure has its perks. Many people love and adore you, hang on your every word, and would stand outside for days at a concert hall just to get a good look at you. Thousands of people gather around the television every week day night to watch E! News, where they can catch up on the latest celebrity gossip. For other public figures, their lives can be viewed on the daily news. Being public would be great for an advancement of a career but it could also be the destruction of a career as well. If we believe that public figures are receiving enough privacy in their lives, we are sadly mistaken. Although Public figures have as much right to their private lives as the average person, they should expect that their private lives will be scrutinized based on the major role they play in society. In this paper I will distinguish the difference between public figures wanting their private lives to stay private and public figures that are not opposed to having their private lives exposed.
There are those individuals who like to distinguish the difference between their public lives and their private lives. Before he was president, he was a senator. Barack Obama is a political leader and managed to keep his private live separate from his career. Only with his campaign and presidency has he had to be more “candid”. For the most part, even know, private things that concern him and his family seem to be “private”. Aside from the vacation that they take once a year to Hawaii, President Barack Obama and his family lead as private a life as they can, considering the president’s line of duty. Another individual who leads a private life is Johnny Depp. This man has been in the public eye since 1984 and has managed to lead a very private life off screen. Unlike other celebrities in similar positions, Depp has escaped relatively unscathed by the tabloids. He is not perfect, but according to associated content, he refrains from speaking about his home life in public and does not allow the cameras to catch him in any embarrassing public displays. Being a public figure means that you are going to be in the public eye however, if you chose to have a private life it is achievable to a degree. There are those individuals who are on the opposite spectrum and do not mind exposing their private lives.
The Kardashian Family is a prime example of public figures that do not mind their private life being on display. Their show, Keeping up with the Kardashians, currently has four seasons and chronicles their lives. Everything from their business “D-A-S-H”, to photo shoots, to Kourtney getting pregnant, Khloe` getting married, and everything in between is divulged through this reality show. The only reason anyone would voluntarily do this, is to gain publicity. When stars like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton openly violate their parole, they should expect for the general public to be aware and to have opinions. When celebrities kiss one another on stage during a publicly aired television show, they should be ready for the castigation that comes with their action. Although the lives of others can be interesting, there is no need for the general public to know everything that is taking place in someone else’s life. It is when public figures do these things in the open that it elicits an interest among others.
In closing, being a public figure inevitably means that others are watching your actions. Everyone is entitled to privacy but public figures must acknowledge that they have to work a little harder for it. If you chose to act in ways that could be exposed to the general public, then you have to be ready for the criticisms. It is not impossible to hold a private life, even for the most publicly involved individuals.

  4. Today public figures are regarded as celebrities should expect their private lives to be scrutinized. Music artists, actors and reality TV stars choose to pursue a career in front of the camera, there is an implicit understanding that watching celebrity lives doesn’t end when the camera stops rolling. In contemporary society where tabloids take up a majority of the space on newsstands, it is not hard to make the correlation of how much fans want to learn about their lives off-screen. Although, not all public figures are celebrities and therefore did not explicitly choose to life in the public eye. Children of celebrities, for example, did not choose to live in the limelight. Whether or not public figures should expect that their private lives be analyzed is often met with dissent; however, in this essay I will show that the desire fans have to know information about celebrities is relative to how much celebrities want to remain relevant and popular.

Celebrities know that fame can often be evanescent, so some use the exposure they get from tabloids to their benefit. Although sometimes it seems as though tabloids embellish stories for higher sales, celebrities adept at using media attention for their promotional benefit. After the 2004 Super Bowl, Janet Jackson received a lot of media attention regarding the “wardrobe malfunction” incident during her half-time performance with Justin Timberlake. Many speculate if she used the exposure for her benefit because less than a month later she released her album, Danity Jo. Sometimes celebrities invite cameras and speculation into their lives because they believe that ultimately their careers will benefit from the exposure.

Some celebrities go as far as inviting cameras into their homes to provide the world with footage from their private lives. Often famous people want to set limits on how much information they divulge with the public, but new precedents are set every time a celebrity lets the public in on more of their private affairs. In an effort to include fans see their private lives, some celebrities allow camera crews into their homes. This is not always the most prudent decision, especially when new couples decide to take on this type of feat. Often the end result for celebrities like Jessica Simpson, Carmen Electra, and Brittney Spears, is the dissolution of their personal relationships. The pressure of always being watched, sometimes when it is unwarranted is often too much for a relationship to handle, especially in its early stages. Therefore, it is illogical for celebrities who invite cameras into the private sectors of their lives to also be offended by public intrusion into their personal business.

In conclusion, public figures who chose a life of fame must understand that they have to take the good with the bad. If they want to continue to be popular and successful they have to concede to allow their fans to relate to them on a personal level. If celebrities alienate themselves from their fan base, fans may perceive them as disingenuous and no longer chose to support them. Unfortunately those who did not chose their fame, simply have to accept this standard, and try live as private a life as possible. If public figures chose to welcome cameras into their lives, as the saying goes “give them an inch and they will take a mile.”

  5. Once an individual establishes fame, their private lives eventually become public. Their significant or tragic experiences become exposed to anyone and everyone who pays attention to media. Professional appearance, behavior, and comments are no longer aspects of celebrities’ lives that can be considered confidential. Ultimately, celebrities do not have a personal life that can be kept out of the public eye. Mass media will always be in their midst to capture every moment. Consequently, public figures should expect their private lives to be scrutinized.

Allowing insight into the private lives of public figures, politicians in particular, help people evaluate the character of their leaders. Some critics would disagree with the notion that public figures should anticipate an invasion of privacy. Media should show consideration for personal space in regards to certain sectors of everyone’s life. For example, perhaps the political sex scandal involving Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky was an incident that did not deserve its place in the limelight. Such a level of intimacy is no one else’s business. At the same time, however, loss of privacy is an implicit characteristic of public standing. It is especially tacit when considering the prominence of holding the presidential office. The wide reporting of the scandal may have led to criticism, but both Clinton and the American people should have expected extensive coverage.

Those who remain in public standing fundamentally become a part of the free-market. The whole objective of an actor, comedian, or musician is to sell their work. The definition of their work can be considered a product and image of themselves. As a result, when people look forward to watching or hearing whatever celebrities have been involved in, they expect both positive and negative highlights. For example, when Jennifer Hudson sang the National Anthem at the Democratic Convention, she received a lot of public praise. On the other hand, the world was also present to document her tears once the deaths of her family members reached the news. Although dealing with the loss of individuals close to you is a private matter, it is no longer easy to hide from press once a figure has established a name for themselves.

In conclusion, people have the right to know about those in power or in entertainment over them. In both cases, the people have a right to follow the decisions made by politicians and celebrities because they essentially pay their salaries. The support public figures have is not a result of their own making. Individuals invest money into an artist’s newest album, an actor’s latest film, and tax, which is put towards political officials in particular. With that in mind, how can one say these payers do not have a right to keep informed about the lives of people who profit from their dollars and time? No clear line can be drawn in public operations; celebrities and politicians join those operations. As a result, their lives can no longer be so personal.

  6. Public figures are usually politicians, celebrities and sports icons who as a consequence of their high profile status, are known by many people. They have the financial and political power to influence society and whether they intend to or not they often do just that. However, with great power comes great responsibility. If the lives of public figures are not looked at closely our lives and society might be influenced negatively without us even being aware of it. It is not only critical that the lives of public figures be scrutinized but any action that they make that might influence us should be openly talked about.

An important reason why the lives of public figures should be scrutinized is that their lives are not as individual as some imagine it to be. Public figures: actors, musicians, politicians, sports players, talk show hosts, all have fans and supporters. They are all role-models to children and examples who we all aspire to be like. Children, who learn by subconsciously mimicking the actions and behaviors of influential people in their lives, are especially susceptible to being negatively influenced by public figures who do not live socially moral lives. The famous golfer Tiger Woods for instance is a role model to many aspiring golfers. However, he recently committed several adulterous acts against his wife. This behavior is absolutely unacceptable, especially for a role-model, and we as a society should address this and make it clear to our children that adultery is wrong. Another example, Lindsay Lohan a popular actress is now sentenced to ninety days in prison for violating her probation by failing to attend her alcohol awareness classes. Again, this is unacceptable. The behaviors of these very influential people should not be allowed to be replicated by the youth of our society. Their behaviors should be openly talked about so that we have a consensus that they are unacceptable.

Many people look at celebrities as the victims of vicious public scrutiny though. They think that it is unfair that the details of these people’s lives are often plastered all over the media. However, celebrities and politicians are not oblivious to the lives that they get themselves into. In fact, they often seek out these lives of fame and popularity knowing, very well its consequences. For instance, participants who sign up for reality shows do extensive paper-work detailing the complications of their endeavors. It is mandatory that each of these participants agree to give up certain privacy rights before participating on the shows. They are therefore in no position to complain about their privacy after they go out of their way to put themselves in positions where they know that their private lives will be scrutinized. Furthermore, in the case of reality shows, the participants get a generous stipend for displaying their personal lives. In one sense, working on a reality show is a job. The job description includes displaying your public life. Celebrities are not victims of public scrutiny but they often chose the lives they have and in many cases they get paid generously for doing just that.

The lives of public figures have are too influential to be ignored. Whether they like it or not, the decisions that public figures make affect all of us. We have every right to scrutinize their behaviors and make sure that public figures live their lives according to the high pedestal that we put them on. We give celebrities like our favorite football player, or our favorite singer, our respect, our financial support and our time. We must ensure that they live suitable lives that deserve such accolades.

  7. Each day, the media assaults our society with images of celebrity mishaps and the subsequent stories behind them. Following the aforementioned “news lines,” discussion often revolves around the need for the frivolity of insight into celebrity lives. Although much conversation is made of the non-necessity of such tales, the public eye is, nonetheless, drawn to and, indeed, is enthralled by such absurdities. Due to this fact, public celebrities should expect their private lives to be scrutinized; however far this actuality is from the ideal. The cost of which would be, for a celebrity, less than ideal.
Utilizing current popular knowledge, we see that the collective life of celebrities will and will continue to be scrutinized. In the case of the actress, Lindsay Lohan, the former child star has become the bane of the public eye due to her debaucheries—the extent of which included “artwork” painted on her middle finger explaining her sentiments to her judge. The argument against the public display of Ms. Lohan’s trial and subsequent angst opines that it is precisely this type of exploitation that drives public figures to such extreme levels of dissolute behaviors. Although being visible to the public eye may lead to certain pressures, however, many argue that it is due to this fact that many public figures are granted commuted sentences and only serves as a benefit.
Yet, another, prime example of a current public figure facing scrutiny is the case of former Vice-President, Al Gore. Mr. Gore is currently facing charges of sexual assault by a masseuse. The recent story, which has been the source of chaff for many talk-shows and television programs, brings to light the role of the media in such cases. Some may note that it is our duty to scrutinize public figures, particularly politicians, due to their impact on our society and on future generations, but the differentiation between public scrutiny and media coercion of societal views is, indeed, fine. It is this distinction which causes a rift in the necessity of public scrutiny and the absurdity of the actuality. When the media molds public opinion to yield a specific outcome, the necessity becomes the absurdity that we currently view as reality.
In conclusion, it is irresponsible for celebrities to assume their private lives as private. Furthermore, it is this avoidance of reality that has led our media to create news lines solely based upon celebrity mishaps. If we are to rise above such frivolities, two events must happen: we must, firstly, refuse to give attention to the collective life of celebrities and, secondly, celebrities must learn that the ideal is not in actuality the reality.

  8. Everyone has the right to privacy. However to be a celebrity in today’s society it is to be expected that private lives are not very private. With the advancement of technology, internet, etc. those who are not celebrities are at risk for their privacy being scrutinized so it is inevitable that those in the public eye daily will be scrutinized as well. Celebrities are role models, especially to impressionable children. If they continue to believe that their actions will be kept secret and disregard their status as public figures, more people will imitate both positive and negative behaviors of celebrities. In the following essay I will argue that public figures should expect their lives to be scrutinized. They are in the public realm influencing the behavior of others. But in addition there should also be a fine line that delineates between keeping everyone knowledgeable and an invasion of privacy.
Public figures are entitled to some level of privacy. But the question then becomes exactly what the level of privacy should be. The Encarta dictionary defines public as relating to or concerning the people at large or all members of a community. A public figure would then become someone whose actions concern everyone. Lindsey Lohan is a public figure. She has played in numerous children’s movies and is very well known. Some young females look up to her therefore her recent involvement in the criminal justice system can have both positive and negative effects. Some may look at her behavior and decide that they want to be nothing like her while others may see how being rich affords you the finer things in life. Public figures often chose their lifestyle and their role as public figures. This includes the scrutiny of their private life in order to ensure that they are setting a good example to the community.
Celebrity status does not mean that one’s life is an open book. There are certain aspects of one’s life that is personal and on no scale would be considered public knowledge. This includes an individual’s sex life, family issues, monetary gain or decline, etc. The only exception to disregarding these private moments is if they impact the public. If a company chooses to use bailout money to take a vacation the public is entitled to know how their economy is being harmed. If a popular actor or actress is being accused of a crime the public has a right to know in order to potentially prevent their children from watching and imitating such behavior. Scrutinizing a public figure is not necessary for mediocre issues such as what they eat, where they shop, and what school their children go to. There is a fine line between invading someone’s privacy and keeping the community abreast to issues surrounding them.
In closing, a public figure is subject to scrutiny to maintain public knowledge. Their actions may in fact affect those around them making it essential that such information is disseminated. Celebrities cannot place themselves in a discrete fashion from the spotlight and must be open to revealing some aspect of their lives to ensure a good example is being set in the community.

I agree with your argument that celebrities seek out fame with the understanding that people will want to know them as a celebrity and on a personal level. It is common knowledge that in order to be famous you have to divulge aspects of your life that the averages person may no want to. Celebrities chose their lifestyle and must reap the rewards and the consequences.

  10. @Jazzy, You do a great job of making your point clear and concise. I agree that celebrities are, in fact, role models for many people, so some aspects of their private lives needs to be revealed in order to create a connection.

  11. Modern society has become a society that is predominately based on entertainment and popularity. Because of their status and association with entertainment, celebrities and public figures have become a staple in this new culture; everything they do becomes amplified through the lens of the media and therefore they should expect their private lives to be scrutinized. Some may see a separation between public and private lifestyles, however, celebrities must be aware of both because often times with the scrutiny of the private life comes fame.

Some may think that the private lifestyle should not be publicized and should remain undercover, however it has been proven that letting the public into the private lives of celebrities’ can benefit both the celebrity and the public. In some instances, by revealing their private lives, the social status of a celebrity can be brought down to the level of the public. The average person can start to realize that a celebrity may not be much different from themselves after all. For example, on reality television shows like “Rev Runs House”, the private lives of the family are revealed to the public. People can start to realize that the Simmons family may be filled with celebrities, but they still face many problems that most families face such as: parenting issues, family issues, business issues, etc. While completely revealing the celebrity household, the reality television show helps to build the celebrity image to the rest of the world.

Other popular television shows such as “The Jersey Shore” use the power of entertainment and media to transform average, everyday people into celebrities. Focusing on a specific stereo type, the entire premise of the series called for scrutiny of the individual private lifestyle. Once again, the public could often relate to a specific lifestyle run by social and interpersonal drama. Viewers could watch the series each week and find something in each character or environment that perhaps related to them. Now characters from this television series act as icons in mass media and are celebrities. “The Jersey Shore” revealed a set of personal lives to the public which touched base with millions of people and ultimately created fame. After being exposed to the mass media and world of entertainment, “The Jersey Shore” shows that public and private scrutiny becomes inevitable but at the same time can have a powerful effect on the public.

Therefore, the connection between the celebrity and their private life is realized. Celebrities and public figures have the ability to exploit areas of their private lives in order to create fame. Regardless, celebrities and public figures should expect their private lives to be scrutinized because they remain under the lens of the media so everything they do is magnified.

  12. @Deon,

I understand what you are saying. I feel like privacy will always be an issue for public figures. However if some movie star chooses to go to a remote location for the birth of their child, decides not to disclose the name of the child, and then also decides that they want to sheild the child from the paparazzi, why should that be any of my business? Now if the president is doing something like engaging in activities that affect his ablility to protect this country, then I feel like I have a right to know about that.

  13. Public figure’s private lives in the news are a frequent occurrence. The news reports in detail the aspects of celebrities and other popular icons. These public figures are under constant scrutiny from the press and have cameras flashing at them almost every week, depending on the celebrity possibly everyday. Public figures act as a role model for many people in society, which is an enormous responsibility. Nonetheless, since these figures act as role models and are in the public eye their lives will be fluently criticized or praised. I will argue that public figures should expect their private lives to be scrutinized.

The most recent media obsession is the issues surrounding Tiger Woods personal life. Tiger Woods is a public figure known for his achievements in the world of golf. However, many argue that the media should focus on his career in golf rather than his personal affairs. Tiger Woods is a man who holds power and acts as a role model to a considerably large group of people. When Woods personal affairs surfaced to the media, many companies that had invested in his career as a professional golfer reneged their contracts. Without the assistance of the media, Tiger Woods immoral tendencies would not have been brought to the light of his sponsors or adoring fans. The pro golfer’s “private life” is always within view for people like the media to scrutinize.

Another incident regarding the scrutiny by the media and a public figure is the relationship between pop singer Chris Brown and his partner Rihanna. These two both live a life that cameras follow them everywhere they go, especially when they were a couple. Many would argue that a relationship is a private matter between two people. The fan base of Brown and Rihanna is made up of discerning young adults who look up to public figures like the celebrity couple. The relationship between the two was evanescent due to a physical altercation that ended with Chris Brown in jail with domestic violence charges. The physical violence that Chris Brown elicited against his girlfriend was unforgivable and used as an example for many young men that were fans of the artist. The relationship between Chris Brown and Rihanna engendered a public outrage and the loss of Chris Brown’s career.

In conclusion, with great power comes great responsibility. People in the limelight have a responsibility not only to the companies that endorse them, but also to the fans that admire them. The lives of public figures are without doubt castigated, but for dogmatic reasons. A public figure having a private life is an anomaly. When in view of the public, people in power should engender a life towards the public because these people influence the general population.

  14. Attaining celebrity status is something that many individuals aspire to have. When many think of public figures, individuals are in awe of the glitz, glamour and financial security that many of these individuals have. Nevertheless, when one takes into account the price these public figures pay and the 24/7 criticism they face some are deterred from the idea. Public figures should indeed expect their private lives to be scrutinized because in most cases they have chosen to be in the public eye, they are fully aware of the higher expectation and many kids and teens look to these individuals as role models and trend setters.

While everyone has the right to a level of personal privacy, this level of privacy is often diminished once an individual becomes recognized as a public figure. Those in the public eye are expected to be flawless citizens, however unrealistic this expectation is, it is very valid in American society. Nonetheless, all citizens are expected to be law abiding and productive participants in society, those who live in the spotlight, should expect to have their every move scrutinized and examined under a microscope.

Public figures often times yearn for the anonymity that “normal” people possess when they step out of their homes or cars and aren’t being swarmed by paparazzi, fans or protestors, invading their space and time. Public figures undoubtedly have chosen to be in those positions and must realize that there are positive and negative aspects to everything, including their claim to fame. Knowing this fact one would think that politicians, actors, athletes, etc, would be more conscientious of their actions and avoid scandal, tax evasion and drug use to name a few incidents. The entire world is watching, listening and anticipating their every move and waiting to comment and plaster it all over the six o’clock news. So the question becomes, do these individuals feel that they are above the law or deserve special treatment because they live in the spotlight?

When public figures initially come into the public eye, most reference their childhood experiences and who was influential to their lives and served a motivator for their dreams coming true. With that being said, public figures must realize that there are children, teens and even adults that look to them for an example of proper conduct in society, what trends are popular, etc. There would be no need for press conferences for an athlete or politician to announce a public apology for misconduct or wrong doing, if they were more responsible and did not succumb to the pressure of having authority or celebrity attached to their name. Being a public figure comes with an enormous amount of responsibility and many cannot handle the level of responsibility it requires. While we should all respect public figures and their positions, they must realize they are subject to scrutiny at all times.

  15. As long as human society has been established on this earth, there have been individuals who were widely recognized for leadership and talent. Throughout history, the personal lives of such talented individuals have been placed on public display and judged accordingly. There are many who oppose this process fervently claiming that everyone has a right to a life outside the public eye regardless of position. However, public figures should expect their private lives to be publicly scrutinized because of both the nature of the human beings and the nature of their positions.

It is a very human compulsion to revere other human beings. It gives people something to aspire to, and it also acts a huge reminder that no one is perfect. Opponents may then argue how can such a small number of individuals be expected to shoulder the fallacy of an entire race, but regardless that is part of the unspoken covenant in attaining public status. A perfect example can be seen in American actress Linsay Lohan. All over the world news reports are being released about how she has “fallen from grace,” since she is being incarcerated. While wars are going on throughout the world, Lohan remains top news. Although she may hate how she has been denigrated worldwide as criminal for her personal activities, she should have expected due to the very nature of people who take delight at watching her fall.

Equally as important in understanding the public scrutiny of celebrity private lives as human nature is the very nature of the position itself. In agreeing to become a public figure, one also agrees to give part of their life to the public. Now opponents may argue then that by simply doing a worthwhile deed for humanity may make a well intentioned person into a personal “basket-case.” This fact is sad but true. Regardless, public figures still maintain some level of control. For example, many celebrities entangle their public and private lives in order to advance their career. Accordingly, they should expect a higher degree of public scrutiny. A prime example of this can be seen in the celebrity same-sex kissing phenomenon, which has become commonplace at award shows. Entertainer Miley Cyrus kissed a female back singer on television, but then seemed shocked when the public began to increasingly scrutinize here private life. As a public entertainer she should have expect to have her private life scrutinized due to the nature of her position, especially since she decided to use private antics in the public eye.

Opponents argue that public figures are entitled to personal lives away from public scrutiny. Public figures are just that: public. The term has no natural boundaries except those loosely negotiated between the individuals and the public itself, and even that does not always hold true. Accordingly, these talented individual cannot expect their private lives not to be scrutinized by the public since it goes again their very nature and the nature of the position.

  20. Celebrities should expect their private lives to be scrutinized for everything they do including good and bad actions. However there is a scale of how much celebrities share their private lives, most of the time sharing their private lives is a tactic used for publicity. It can be said that once a person decides to become a celebrity they will renounce to their private live. The media and people are the main components and conductors of celebrities’ lives.

For a celebrity having a private live is almost impossible, since they are always being chase by the media. There are people, who want to know everything about their favorite celebrities because they want to be just like them. People have ideals of how they want to be seen by others and by doing, knowing and wearing the same items and styles as their favorite celebrities they think that it would help them to fix into a certain social group. This is a form of consumerism that pushes the media to acquire all types of information from celebrities, even if it is part of their private lives. The media careless about keeping the lives of celebrities private, rather they care about acquiring capital.

Even if celebrities do not want their private lives to be known it would be almost impossible to keep their lives in private. On one side the media that wants to inform viewers about the lives of celebrities for monetary propose and on the other side people who will contribute to the media just to know about their celebrities. Many people think that by knowing about celebrities they will be on higher rank, especially among their friends.

While some celebrities try to have a private life by camouflaging and hiding from reporters and their fans, others use their private life as a way to get publicity. It our society it is commonly known that most celebrities share their private lives through the media to get more publicity. This is commonly use when celebrities are retaking their careers or if they are releasing a new album or movie. Others decide to share their private lives to be recognized by both the media and the general public.

In today’s society celebrities are a big part of our world, everyone seems to care about the lives of their idols. Everyone is in a way a simulacrum of someone else, someone else who is in a higher rank in our society. This is especially known among teenagers who want to be part of the “cool” group and for most of them knowing about celebrities is part of being “cool”. A Celebrity will always be scrutinize for being who they are, because part of us humans is to condemn others and since celebrities are one of the most notorious social groups they are our main target. Celebrities and humans in general will always be scrutinized it is part of the human nature.

  23. American society values privacy because it ensures the individual pursuit of career and personal objectives without incursion into an individual’s identity, best interests or reputation. Where some have found that the right to privacy is fundamental regardless of social role, others suggest that public figures occupy a special standard in society. The media maintains a free press right to investigate public figures, but insofar as the investigation does not infringe on the expectation of privacy expected by any citizen. Failure to recognize the privacy rights of public figures and officials invades upon the individual “pursuit of happiness” and undermines the American value of privacy as a whole.

Public officials craft their reputation by portraying themselves in a positive manner or through the emanation of certain values. The right of public figures to craft a reputation is not dissimilar to the right of the general public to portray themselves in a certain light. It has been asserted that public officials are exceptions because they act as role models or personify the values of society. The extension of this argument suggests that the media should expose who our role models “really are” through investigation. Investigations however, are frequently conducted through means that would clearly infringe on the privacy rights of any private citizen: spying into celebrity homes, illegally tapping into phone conversations, and obtaining private records and documents are examples of the methods often used. Certain boundaries exist for individuals to assert their private persona with impunity. As long as the media respects those boundaries, the right to lead a private life extends to all individuals, and with those boundaries respected, impropriety and scandal will be eventually revealed.

As a society, if we can scrutinize public officials and celebrities’’ private lives, where are the boundaries of media scrutiny of the general public’s private lives? In a famous Supreme Court decision, it was argued that high school athletes should be forced to test for drug use if they intend to be involved in secondary school athletics. The justices argued that athletes were role models for other high school students who exemplify the values of the school and the greater community. Drug use therefore, runs counter to society’s values and because of the status of high school athletes of role models, they can be excluded from participation if they privately used drugs. Two years later, the justices furthered the role model argument to include involvement in all after school activities. The expectation that individuals are role models for their public actions—be they celebrities, high school athletes, or members of the debate team—narrowly tailors what society defines as an acceptable action.

Scrutiny occurs because society maintains a general consensus of ‘acceptable’ actions. Americans expect that celebrates and politicians will personify their values. When we see those officials not living up to those socially defined values, they are punished with social scorn. Few realize however, that the right of public officials to lead private lives free from scrutiny is the same right of private citizens to lead private lives. Those values are also relative, and appeal only to those who extol certain beliefs or see public figures to be role modes. As long as the media maintains acceptable boundaries, the fundamental freedoms of Americans to “pursue happiness” will be respected regardless of status in public life.

  25. The continue growth in media business has made it harder for public figures and celebrities to hide their flaws and indiscretions when it comes to public eye divulgement. However, public figures and celebrities should, like any other citizen, have the right to privacy at their home. If public figures expect their private lives to be private, then they should be more conscious of their actions and attitudes in public because the press wants to find the flaws of a public figures to enervate their image and also they have to be careful of people that are very observant when it comes to the lives and the scandals of celebrities. So, I do agree that public figures should expect their private lives to be scrutinized, because their public wants to know what is going on their lives.

There are times where celebrities and public figures can keep a clean image in public and they are able to keep their private life from the press. However, there are some scandal journalists that are always trying to find a juicy story to bring more publicity to their magazine or journal about public figures, not just celebrities but political figures. These journalists are trying to dig on the lives of public figures that might have a clean image and try to find flaws to get them out of that throne of scandal free celebrities. Although, it is believed that some celebrities sometimes pay these type of reporters to publicly display their private life in order to get more exposure because they are not as popular as they used to be. Therefore, it depends in the type of person each celebrity/public figure is and whether or not they want to live a happy private life or a scandalous public life.

Moreover, some believe that even though celebrities are public figures they should have the right to keep their private lives away from the press. However, in the other hand, others believe that if they are celebrities they should expect the press to want to know more about their private life. Therefore, if celebrities want their private lives to be out of the public eye, they should be aware that everything they do in public can either affect or help their image. Also, they should be aware that they are not like any private citizens that if they do something outrageous, the only persons that care are his family and friends. But as celebrities and public figures they should be aware that sometimes people might have them as role models and if they exposed themselves in public in a negative way this might have consequences in their careers. This is why they should be careful of what they do in public, if they do not want their lives to be uncovered.

In conclusion, public figures should know that by being a public figure they should expect their lives to be exposed to the public eye. Also, they be aware that it is up to them whether or not they want to keep a clean image or not, because it is all base on their actions and indiscretions. Therefore is up to them to act responsibly and be more careful of what they do in public.

  29. Along with the perks of becoming a celebrity, namely the fame and fortune, also comes the drawback of constant focus under the public eye. As a public figure, while being under persistent scrutiny may not be fair, that level of attention comes with the title. As a part of the public sphere, a television personality, politician, or sports star, a part of your private life is expectedly sacrificed, just as the private lives of all those that came before were. Regardless of whether the practice is just or not, the fascination of everyday people in the lives of their celebrity role models is commonplace and should be expected.

Just this past spring, the world was ablaze with the details of Tiger Woods’ affair. Every aspect of his life was made open to world, down to a computer-generated recreation of the fight he had with his wife that was placed on the internet. Fast-forward a few months to the Jesse James scandal, where inappropriate pictures were leaked as were the events leading up to his divorce from Sandra Bullock. The same media frenzy and the interest of millions of Americans was seen when Chris Brown assaulted his then girlfriend Rihanna and most recently in the misogynistic and racist remarks made by Mel Gibson. All would-be private occurrences for everyday people, because of their celebrity status, the repercussions of such actions are seemingly blown up.

On the more serious side of public life, the same openness is found in the lives of politicians. Who can forget the scandal that President Clinton faced, or the one currently faced by Vice President Gore? Needless to say, there have also been many other scandals facing those whom we elect, the details of which have been made very public. Here, the private lives of public figures are put out in the open simply because elected officials are held to a higher standard. This idea is buttressed by the “smear-campaigns” traditionally run during election season. Whichever way the argument is targeted, because these people have made themselves someone to look to, for entertainment or for leadership, many consequences come with the spotlight.

All in all, affairs, domestic abuse, drug use – all impact the lives of normal people everyday and are blown off as nothing unique. However, when a public figure is affected by a similar event even the most insignificant of information are is detailed over the course of weeks if not months. This type of action is far from new or surprising, so why should public figures subject to it, not expect it?

That the world around us is far more important than being wrapped up in someone else's is a great point you made.

  31. Public figures have always captured the attention of the ordinary person; whether they are public for their political beliefs, their clothing lines, their home runs, or their sex tapes. Though there are many people who would argue that the scrutiny that is often bestowed upon these figures is unfair and unwarranted, I disagree with this opinion. Public figures are exactly that; people who are in the public eye and as such, they must expect their private lives to be scrutinized and invaded. This lack of privacy and judgment passed is the nature of a politician, athlete, celebrity, or sex symbol. In this essay I will argue that although some public figures may receive unwarranted criticisms, there is usually a direct correlation between the actions of public figures and the amount of attention they receive. This can be shown through the cases of such individuals as Kim Kardashian and former President Bill Clinton.

Model and socialite Kim Kardashian has experienced much glorification and criticism in the past few years for her racy video with ex-boyfriend Ray J. Although some people would argue that Kim has had her fifteen minutes of fame, they are not aware of her business savvy. Kim is one celebrity who has embraced the paparazzi and public eye by becoming the center of an E! television series, her own perfume line, modeling jobs (such as Playboy), and dating a pro football player, Reggie Bush. She expects her “private” life to be in the media and is fully accepting of this. Most celebrities could learn from Kim Kardashian and deal with the hand they have earned. She has opened up about her faults and successes and has effectively dealt with the tabloids and press. Other public figures, such as former senator John Edwards, have not responded with such positivity.

John Edwards, the former presidential candidate has been in the spotlight recently for his sexual exploits with a woman other than his wife. Although some would say that his private life should be kept separate from his public affairs, the fact remains that Edwards ran on a very moral political platform. When a magazine published this extramarital affair he lashed out claiming it was false and strictly gossip. Edwards should have expected his private life to be investigated by numerous sources and he should have expected it to be scrutinized. Although many people would say that he should not be judged on his personal life, as a politician, he was supposed to represent Americans and that is not something our country would like to be identified with. What was even more shocking was when his former employee came out with a book on Edwards’ exploits entitled The Politician, while his wife suffers from terminal cancer. Edward should have been well aware that he would be criticized.

Public figures have and will continue to be scrutinized for their actions and they should come to expect this. Still there are many people who feel what is private should remain such. However, this is a naïve view and people will always be interested in matters beyond the cameras and beyond the public eye. Whether a celebrity or a politician, like Kim Kardashian or former Senator John Edwards, the news will have no sympathy for their actions. They are under a microscope twenty four seven and this comes with being famous. Though more scandalous acts receive more intense reactions, even if a celebrity is on a date with her husband, she will be photographed because the public wants to see that these celebrities are people too.

  32. Paul,

I liked how you made this prompt more about values than just a simple invasion of privacy. For you it was less about celebrities and the paparazzi than crossing the line. You were able to state it very eloquently and I think that your argument could have been improved with more concrete examples.

  33. Our society is overrun with the idea of celebrity. If people aren’t trying to get famous, they are obsessing over someone who already is. While there are many benefits that come with being famous, there are also just as many negative consequences that come along with it. While many believe that today’s paparazzi and scandal spreading tabloids have become out of control, it seems that the invasion of one’s private life comes with being famous. Public figures trade their right to privacy for the many desired benefits that come with being famous in America.
For those who are considered celebrities, very often their careers depend upon their lack of privacy. While many of them act as if they loathe the paparazzi, most of the time it is the celebrity who divulged there own whereabouts to the photographers. If the public were not interested in their private lives, they would be out of a job. Part of being a celebrity is playing to the audience. People want to go to the movies to see the person they feel connected too. That connection only comes from knowing details about the actor’s lives and interests. For celebrities, it is a necessary part of the job to stay relevant and in the public eye. It is the only way they can continued to be employed, otherwise, moviemakers will find someone else who is willing to put their private life out there.
With the introduction of reality television, more and more pressure has been put on celebrities to expose their personal lives to the public to compete with the many who already do. Letting the public into your personal life has now become a means to get ahead in the business. It may seem unfair to those serious actors who prefer to keep their private lives private, but it is their fellow actors who have made it impossible for them to do so. The public craves private information about the celebrities they love and it is the patronage of the public that supplies actors with their million dollar paychecks. To an extent, they owe the public for the extravagant lives they lead, so in return, they should give the public what it wants.
It is easy to blame both the public and the paparazzi for the over exposure of celebrities, but in the end, public figures only have themselves to blame. Everything has a price, and when you enter the public real, you trade your privacy for fame. This has been an understood doctrine for years, yet celebrities continue to act surprised when the public wants to know details about their personal life. It is a sacrifice they make for their passion, and anyone who follows their passion knows that sacrifices need to be made. Celebrities aren’t much different than the mother who had to give up her career or the student who has moved away from their family, well except maybe when it comes to their paycheck. Everyone makes sacrifices to follow their dreams in life. Privacy is just one of the many on the list to be a celebrity.

You have a strong thesis and it looks even stronger with every point you made in each paragraph. It was a great essay and I like the way you close up your argument.

  35. Public figures should expect their private lives to be scrutinized. One of the problems that famous figures have to deal with is the media. It seems that the media is not only interested in sending the message of the good things that public figures do but they pay more attention and are ready to publish information that is negative about these people. Public figures have the right of privacy at present times the media do not respect this important right. However, when these people enter the entertainment media they should expect they lives to be scrutinized because, it is part of the contract they are signing, it is an economic business and the fans like to know more about the lives of their favorite public figures.

Even if public figures are not that different from the average person, there is a main difference between them which is the fact that they are well known. Famous people are expected to have their lives scrutinized because when they sign the contract they also sign the contract to a new life. Their lives will never be like they used to because they are portrayed in the media and they are well known. For example, they will be check and follow for the press everywhere they go because it is the work of the press to publish or show this information that people want to know. This is the price they have to pay for being famous even if it seems embellish but they are not an average person anymore and have privileges normal people do not. .

Although, some public figures try hard to keep their lives private this does not work all the time. Sometimes the media is at any place and even if you have body guards they will know where you are and they will follow you. One of the reasons why the media is following every step these public figures take is the economic business behind it. The public likes to know this information and they get it via the media. Magazines make a lot of money because they cover the lives of famous people. At the same time there are some public figures that contact the media to publish information about their private lives. For example, it is not uncommon for a famous couple to call certain magazine to cover the birth of their baby and this is an exclusive that will sell a lot and the couple will get a good amount of money. In this situation, not only the media wins but the public figure does too.

Public figures are who they are for the people who follow them and these people are the fans. There are some fans that do whatever it takes to know everything about their favorite artist. Even if the job of public figures is only to be performers at movies or music sometimes they have to pay the price and give the fans the information they want because they are who they are because the support of the fans. Now it has been easier for fans to get information from their favorite actor in Twitter the social web and via the artist which is more legitimate. There needs to be a balance between how much privacy the artist wants to have and how much their fans want to know.

There are disparate reasons why the lives of public figures are scrutinized including money and the price they have to pay for being famous. The media goes as far as they have to get this important information. But the media should have discretion because sometime they go too far and the artist cannot have a normal life. Nowadays the price these public figures have to pay is too high but they know what they were getting into. This is part of their contract and they have to deal with it or work to have some privacy.

  36. The lives of celebrities are painstakingly dissected daily by the media. Although many believe this is an infringement of basic rights, by nature of their ostentatious lifestyles, public figures should expect to be watched closely. Further, rights are not absolute, and at some degree of fame they are likely to be infringed upon. Therefore, a possible invasion of privacy is a fundamental repercussion of being a public figure that should be readily anticipated.

Many celebrities despise the fact that their lives are constantly exhibited for all to view. Regardless of whether one has stumbled upon super stardom or it just so happened to come with their chosen profession, when you become a public figure you forfeit a part of your life. For example, politicians may purely wish to enact legislation and represent potential voters without media castigation. However, as one can see from contemporary incidences such as the discovery of affairs by Bill Clinton or New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevy, the private lives of politicians are equally relevant and important to voters. As was made evident to politicians being deemed a public figure allows for potential scrutiny.

Celebrities often complain that they should not be admonished by the media and fans for their private or even public actions. However, they ignore the fact that they have surpassed being a mere average citizen and have become heroes and iconic symbols. Recently, there has been much controversy surrounding teen superstar Miley Cyrus. Many critics, including parents of her fans, believe that newly provocative Miley is no longer an acceptable role-model for young girls. Miley and many others argue that she never anticipated being a role model for teenage girls. What celebrities such as Miley fail to recognize, the media, has turned them into iconic symbols, making their mistakes and activities subject to extreme surveillance.

In conclusion, when one is a celebrity or public figure a certain level of publicity is to be expected. As exemplified by politicians and superstars, privacy is not extended to all in our society. Regardless of whether or not it is realistically fair, celebrities are upheld to an extreme standard of perfection.

  39. The lives of public figures are often scrutinized by the public. In today’s world, the media makes it very easy for the public to attain up-to-the-minute updates of the lives of famous individuals. With the invention of mobile web applications, wireless users are often immediately notified of ground-breaking news like up-to-date coverage on anything from the oil spill and the President’s decisions concerning the war to Lindsey Lohan’s jail sentence. Often times, private information regarding celebrities’ eating habits, drug addictions, relationships, and job statuses are the disposal of millions of people. However, some may feel that the lives of celebrities and other famous people should be kept private and only revealed at liberty. The term “public figure” is often used synonymous with “role model” or “leader” in some aspect of life. Therefore, the influence public figures have on the general public often perpetuates a need for their lives need to be scrutinized.

In terms of parenting, many guardians are often critical of their child’s exposure to inappropriate media content. For this reason, the content of most television shows are often rated. While parents may not be able to fully control what their child is exposed to in the media, having a better idea of a specific person’s life can help parents make better decisions when censoring media content for their children. For example, if a prospective babysitter interviewed and took well to your kids, but a background check revealed an abusive past, with reasonable consideration, chances are slim that this babysitter would be hired. The same idea can be applied to the lives of public figures like Lindsey Lohan or Miley Cyrus, who began their careers on the Disney channels. Like in the babysitter example, looking deeper into the lives of public figures can address issues of trust.

Public figures should be aware of how determined paparazzi and other news representatives are to attain private information regarding their lives. On Twitter, some celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Ashton Kutcher often make fun of paparazzi and mimic them by taking pictures of the paparazzi and posting them on Twitter. While it is difficult to limit the access of the media, public figures should be aware of the delicacy of their actions. Because of the media, the actions of public figures are often weighted on a greater scale than other, less famous people. Take for example, eight-time, Olympic gold medalist, Michael Phelps, who lost million dollar endorsement and acquired swimming penalties because of a picture that surfaced of him smoking marijuana. While no one is disputing the legality of his actions, the carelessness of his actions is a clear cut example of why public figures should be conscience of their actions and aware of any associated consequences their behaviors may elicit, if made public.

  40. Choosing to be a public figure implies choosing a life that seen and judged by others. Many of times, these public figures, whether intentional or not, are role models. Although, public figures have chosen a life that is readily seen by others, it is usually within their means to limit how much private information is divulged to the public. Limiting how much information is revealed about their lives, also limits how much the public can scrutinize their lives. Just like on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, users have to ability to reveal as much or as little information about themselves as they chose. Some may feel that the lives of celebrities like Lindsey Lohan are unfairly analyzed and downcasted by society. With proper precaution, public figures can maintain a private life, free from the criticism and scrutiny of others. This has been evident in the life of Bill Gates. Bill Gates has affected the lives of millions of Microsoft-users around the world, but has revealed minimal details about any of his private affairs. Clearly, the lives of public figures will be scrutinized, however with precaution, how much information these individuals wish to reveal is within their power.

In conclusion, to be a public figure means to have a life, or some aspects of that person’s life, known to the public. Public figures often place themselves in positions where it should be accepted for the public to be aware of their actions. However, public figures should exercise discretion in their actions when making public appearances or engaging in public social events. Because famous and well known individuals are more likely to receive publicity, their lives are often scrutinized on a greater scale. Scrutiny is necessary in the lives of public figures since they have a greater influence on the general public.

    @Alex

Great argument. I completely agree with how celebrities need to expect a certain level of publicity. It truly comes with the job. While their privacy may be infringed upon, celebrities, as role models, need to expect some scrutiny. It comes with the job. I also liked how you made you point very clear in the end- privacy is not extended to all parts of society.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Public figures like to argue that their lives should not be scrutinized due to a multitude of issues including privacy. Tabloids have been known to over exaggerate pictures and comments made by celebrities however the media has also shown the wrongdoing of the public figures. Not showing their inadequacies have led to judges sentencing them to lesser charges. Politicians, actors, athletes and other public figures are artless for believing that their lives should not be examined by the public for the following three reasons: a history of being under prosecuted for crimes; occupational choice; and being seen as role models.
Lindsay Lohan is known as the girl from Parent Trap however she is also known as a drug abuser. In 2007 she spent 84 minutes in jail after pleading guilty to “two misdemeanor counts of being under the influence of cocaine, and no contest to two counts of driving with a blood-alcohol level above 0.08 percent and one count of reckless driving.” The problem with this situation is that the judge condoned her crime by giving her such a light sentence compared to what she would get if she wasn’t a celebrity. This verdict creates a dichotomy of people with celebrities being given special laws and repercussions that are different than the general public. Recently she was caught violating her probation conditions and another judge sentenced Lindsay to attend an inpatient rehab program after spending 90 days in jail. At the court house she teared up saying she was trying as hard as she could to balance work and the probation requirements. The judge redeemed the judicial system by giving her a harder sentence this time and hopefully it will teach her and other celebrities that they are not above the law and even though they have fame and fortune they are still supervised by the same laws as everyone else.
Most public figures complain about their adamant fans and paparazzi constantly being in their personal lives. They say that they need personal time and should be able to enjoy the luxury of privacy as everyone else. However, most people including actors, sports players, and political figures choose their position. The axiom of these positions is that with fame comes not only money but also a spotlight in the public life in all aspects of ones life. An actor cannot expect their fans to stop wanting to see them after the camera turns off. This goes for all occupations where the public is expected view a person or people as entertainment in any fashion or look to for advice. Public figures shouldn’t complain about people talking about them or looking into their business because their occupations call for the public to be intrigued by them.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The third point is that public figures are considered role models to their young and old fans. A role model is ”a person who serves as a model in a particular behavioral or social role for another person to emulate.” Actors and sport players give children of similar characteristics and demographics something to aspire to. A famous person is not able to remove their role model status because it is too hard due to a different set of standards they must live by when compared to the bourgeois or lower classes. Opposition on this point claims that parents should be role models to their children and explain what a role model should be. This is true, however, parents are not always able to be around and it is not an esoteric fact that during adolescence parental knowledge is rarely recognized by offspring. Thus children imitate the celebrities and public figures they see which depending on their choice of role model can be deleterious to their development. This is why the lives of public figures should be inspected so that our children are not imitating immoral, criminal or unethical adults.
Public figures have the right to reduced privacy because of their profession and their role as models to the youth. However, they are not above the law which something that Lindsey Lohan now understands and so many other celebrities. These points explain why icons are constantly inspected not only by the media but parents. Overall famous people must live by a different set of standards because of their importance to their fans and the youth.

I agree with your point on how celebrities should be scrutinized. Your usage of examples like Mike Phelps and Ashton Kutcher help make your argument more sound. I also like the point about how celebrities have the power to determine how much of their personal lives is revealed to the general public. Overall it was a very good essay with great supporting arguments.

  44. Some people hold the belief that public figures in society such as celebrities, athletes, and government officials should expect their private lives to be scrutinized. Though this opinion may seem austere, it is not only valid, but an inevitable reality for most. Public figures usually bear the responsibilities of being a role models to others in society. If public images deny this responsibility and do not carry themselves with dignity in their private lives, they risk becoming poor influences on society and weak links as contributing citizens. Henceforth, public figures should expect their private lives to be scrutinized.
The private lives of public figures should expect scrutiny because of the natural implications of being a celebrity. Once an individual puts on the hat of fame, everyone in the general public turns a curious eye towards the life of that person. For instance, once a person enters into a high position of authority, such as the presidency, everything that proceeds from their mouths is immediately under scrutiny. Therefore, knowing that scrutiny of private life comes with being a public figure facilitates “watching what they say”, or “saying the right thing” when they think no one is watching or listening.
Public figures should expect scrutiny of their private lives because society thrives on the scandalous lives of the famous. An example of this is the recent incarceration of actress and singer, Lindsay Lohan. After receiving a sentence of 90 days in jail for not attending rehab sessions as previously sentenced, the news media took no time in writing many reports of the “he said, she said” remarks made by the judge, her attorney, and Lindsay herself. Although media should focus on more important matter than these, it is inevitable that private scandalous behaviors, such as Lindsay’s drug and alcohol abuse, is under public scrutiny simply because of the gossip-driven atmosphere of society today.
Since public figures can be viewed as role models for others in society, these figures should expect scrutiny in their private lives. This statement is especially true for athletes and music artists. For instance, recent drug-related incidents involving public figure Michael Phelps have stirred much attention because of his role in society. As a highly successful and respectable athlete who is admired by many, Michael Phelps should expect scrutiny of his drug use because of the unhealthy and immoral implications that come with that behavior. Miley Cyrus, another public figure in popular music, has undergone scrutiny for an incident involving pictures of herself that she had taken, wearing nothing but undergarments. Because of her young age and the figure that she is for the teeny-bopper generation, this behavior is taboo and unacceptable. The public should be able to scrutinize these actions in order to safeguard the eyes and ears of youth from such behaviors, and public figures should expect it.
The scrutiny of one’s private life is inevitable as a public figure and should be expected. Public figures may be role models for younger generations in society and it is therefore their responsibility to accept scrutiny for the actions they commit in their private lives. Furthermore, the expectation of scrutiny may prevent public figures from behaving in a way that is taboo in society. Therefore, expecting scrutiny in one’s private life is important for success as a public figure.

  46. Each day current events are flooded with news about public figures and celebrities. The type of news varies based on what’s going on in celebrities’ and public officials’ careers and personal lives. While the media has at times intruded on the privacy of such people, many of these individuals must realize they have chosen careers related to public affairs and media and placed themselves in the limelight. It is important to remember that unlike other professions, these types of careers involve media publicity, public support and consumerism. Therefore, for individuals who choose to “sell themselves” and their personal lives as a part of their careers should expect their private lives to be scrutinized.

Media publicity is a major component of the job for public figures. As such, appearances on television specials, interviews, and taking part in other forms of media require that public officials and celebrities place themselves for the public to see. While media publicity has become a part of their profession, celebrities and public officials can choose the level to which publicity includes aspects of their personal lives. There are many instances where public figures disclosure much of their personal lives to advance their careers. Participating and having a reality television is an example where public figures invite the public into their personal lives. While this is great way to promote themselves, when one is putting their life on public display, public security and criticism is sure to follow. Nevertheless, celebrities and public figures can actively increase or limit the amount of publicity they seek.

Secondly, public figures often use their “images” and personal lives to generate public support and favor. This is particularly true for public officials who market their personal lives and traits in order to campaign for supporters. It is also in this case that policy makers are constantly have the spot light because with their positions they are entrusted with making decisions with the public in mind. Therefore, their personal attributes and actions influence public sentiments of trust and support. The public needs to feel like they can trust and support officials in office. As such, public scrutiny is another aspect of the job for public officials

Lastly, many public officials use their personal lives to further their businesses to increase consumerism of their products. Celebrities and public figures often write an autography to discuss their lives and rise to success. Openly discussing their lives in publication and through media, opens the door to public criticism and attention. Once cannot expect to offer this type of material and information to the public without different perspectives about their choices and actions.

In conclusion, public figures must realize that because their professions require public attention, therefore public scrutiny is a necessary evil. Though celebrities and public figures need publicity, they do play a role in the type of publicity they receive and the level of information they disclose. Yet, they must realize that public scrutiny will always play a role in their jobs because they require public attention.

  47. Ariel,

Your use of GRE words was fabulous! For improvements, try not to use quotations without the proper quoting format and source. Also, try avoid saying things like "by giving her such a light sentence" because it sounds like you are having a conversation instead of arguing a point. Very good essay with clear thesis, examples, and points!

  48. As put forward under the fourth amendment, there’s an expectation of privacy for American citizens. It is natural to assume that this right to privacy is extended equally to all citizens, with wealth, political connections, or celebrity status not a factor. However, in today’s society, it the expectation for these members to live private lives is a falsehood and unrealistic. The reason that this expectation is a falsehood is based on a multitude of factors, which can be broadly categorized as a fault of the person of celebrity status, and a fault of the society that demands to breach their privacy on a daily basis. By exploration of these topics, I hope to show how fallible the expectation of privacy for celebrities in American society is.
Many argue that celebrities are the same as everyone else and should have the same amount of privacy, however with the exception of those thrown into the spotlight by pure chance, many celebrities knowingly made a decision to pursue a career in which their lives would be exposed. The best example of this would be politicians. In this career, potential candidates are often discourage or prevented from running in an election no matter their political qualifications if they have metaphorical skeletons in their closet, due to the likelihood of them being exposed during a campaign. To become a representative of the people, is to accept scrutinisation, since the people have a right to know explicit details of the individual they elect to represent their ideals and values. Movie stars, musicians, and athletes are only a step beneath these expectations. While their pursuit of the spotlight is to exhibit a talent or skill they have for people to appreciate, to gain this appreciation they must open up their lives for their fans who look to them as pseudo-heros. These individuals are capable of keeping their lives private, but must be aware of their public image and that their actions come under greater scrutiny when performed in public, although often with lesser consequences as noted with Lindsey Lohan’s two hours in jail for driving under the influence twice, a charge that normally carries heavy consequences for the average American. While these celebrities may desire privacy, most made the conscious decision to pursue a career in which they knew their lives would be exposed, and as such, should not have an expectation of privacy.
The expectation of privacy in celebrity lives is further proved a falsehood by the society that elevates them to celebrity status. In American society, the fastest growing pool of celebrities is that of the reality television star. These individuals contradict the traditional model of what classifies a celebrity as they lack a special skill or talent that truly separate them from the rest of society. Why are Americans so fascinated with these seemingly “average joes”, their complete lack of privacy on reality tv shows. On these shows, every waking minute, conversation, and emotion is filmed and distributed to the public, allowing them to form a connection with these individuals, that they sometimes do not posses with their own family members. Americans demand details to form connections with these individuals, whether or not the connection is real or reciprocated. As long as Americans demand this amount of details and intimacy with their celebrities, the expectation of privacy is null and void.
While there are some exceptions to this, often individuals that are often cast unfairly into the spotlight due to misfortune in their lives and did not willingly choose to have their privacy violated. Most celebrities choose a career in which the expectation of privacy has failed to exist for decades, and in doing so accept the responsibilities that come with. This responsibility is to please the American society that will continually demand an increasing amount of details about their idols in order to establish artificial connections. The morality of such lack of privacy has not been argued, but the expectation of privacy is a falsehood.

I like that you brought up reality tv and how it has further increased privacy invasion. I feel like your argument could have been helped with another strong point- possibly addressing public figures outside of Hollywood.

  52. Lifestyles of the rich and famous often serve as topics for discussion in tabloids, on television shows and, lately, on the news. The degree to which these peoples’ lives receive scrutiny is also a contentious issue. While the morals and the privacy factor can be argued, public figures should expect their private lives to be scrutinized. Words like paparazzi, scandal and tabloids are associated with fame as much as words like rich, powerful and glamorous. Whether or not its sought or deserved, people in the spotlight should expect the microscope treatment of their private lives because that’s what they’re going to get.

Even though some jobs, like pro swimming or golf, aren’t generally subjected to the fine tooth comb of Hollywood, a key word in the label public figure is ‘public’. A large number of people can see these figures and they will inevitably form judgments and impressions of people in the public light. The general public wonders what goes on in the lives of the people they see on television. The public spends money and time buying and reading magazines or watching E! to find out what these people do differently. When these actions and lifestyles go against conventional morals, the media and public render their judgments.

The way tabloids pry, they would be able to find the ‘dirt’ - questionable decisions and mistakes- they seek in anyone’s life. But many celebrities and athletes seek the spotlight. Fame is a major motivator for people seeking acting and music careers in the 21st century; simply sharing their craft isn’t enough. With the wave of reality television, public figures welcomed the opportunity to get paid to get their name out by simply living their lives plus cameras. Album and movie releases mean touring the talk show circuit to let inform and tease people with highlights of the upcoming media

Gaining the attention of the public eye also extends to politicians. Politicians will not get elected to office by a public who doesn’t know their name, values and their views. The public looks for a person that agrees with their beliefs and embodies the best in society. By putting their character and values on display and vowing to represent serve the public, politicians must also be accountable when they fall short. They have the power to make serious changes and must act accordingly

Famous has two definitions: well-known and excellent. While all public figures are human first, they still fall into at least one of those definitions. Many of their careers depend on their ability to satisfy the criteria. Entertainers’ checks increase with the number of people who recognize and subsequently patronize their work. Politicians and athletes are expected to perform and conduct themselves ‘famously’. While scrutiny should be based upon a public figures profession and shouldn’t extend beyond their respective arenas for some, all should expect that the line will be crossed when something goes wrong, if not before.

  54. Many public figures feel that they can do whatever they want without repercussions. However, what they do not realize is that their private lives are under the same microscope as their public lives. As a result, the way in which they conduct themselves will be publically known and thus their actions will serve as a reflection of how a typical American acts. Thus, because public figures act as models for Americans, their private lives should be scrutinized.
Celebrities may argue that they owe nothing to the public, and thus should not be required to act a certain way. However, with fame and fortune comes responsibility. Instead of being selfish with the way they conduct themselves, celebrities should be concerned with giving back to the society that is allowing them their privileged status. As a result, one of the best ways to do this is by setting a good example to portray Americans in a positive light.
Some may argue that there are no significant negative consequences to the behavior of public figures. However, this is a superficial statement. Though on the surface there may not be any serious consequences there are lasting effects that linger as a result of bad behavior. The most serious of which may be the message that their behavior is sending to younger generations. Children look up to public figures as their role models because they see them the most via the media and also because they have accomplished what the children hope to accomplish in the future (pro- athletes, actors, politicians, etc.). Thus, children will want to emulate their role models thinking that the way they behave is characteristic of someone in their position. If a public figure behaves negatively, their admirers will think it is OK to behave negatively as well.
It can be argued that if public figures can keep their lives truly private and out of public eyes, then what they do should not be of concern to the public. The problem with this statement is that it is nearly impossible in this era for a public figure to keep their lives completely private. Paparazzi are determined as ever and the media never hesitates to report on even the slightest details about a public figure. When someone becomes a public figure, all aspects of their life become public whether they like it or not.
Although it may not be fair to public figures for their private lives to be under such scrutiny it remains necessary. Because scrutiny of a public figures private life is not a new action, anyone who aspires to one day become famous should be aware of the scrutiny and mentally prepare for it. After all, it is just a small price to pay for their fame.
